At memmo Alfama, history and creativity come toegether to reveal the many layers of one of Lisbon's oldest neighbourhoods. From archaelogical discoveries and preserved architectural elements to contemporary artworks by renowned artists, each piece tells a story connected to the building, the city and the people who shaped them. Throughout the hotel, guests are invited to explore these stories and discover a different perspective ont Alfama. 

A Building Shaped by Centuries

Long before becoming memmo Alfama, this building witnessed different chapters of Lisbon's history. During its restoration, archaelogical excavations uncovered traces of Roman, medieval and more recent periods, many of which remain preserved throughout the hotel today. Alongside them, contemporary artworks create a dialogue between heritage, creativity and place. Together, they offer a unique journey through the history and identity of Alfama. 

Roman Column Base

A reminder of ancient Olisipo, when Roman Lisbon flourished along the banks of the Tagus. This archaelogical discovery reveals one of the earliest chapters of the city's history. 

Bread Ovens

These nineteenth-century ovens once supplied freshly baked bread to the neigbourhood of Alfama. Preserved within the hotel, they remain a testament to the building's past.

Moorish Walls

Part of the anciet defensive walls built during Lisbon's Islamic period, these remains reveal a time when the city was know as al-Ushbuna.

Original Building Door

A modest architectural element that reflects one of the building's most recent chapters and the people who once lived and worked here.

Archaeological Artefacts

Discovered during the restoration of the building, these objects offer a glimpse into the daily lives of those who inhabited this place over the centuries.

Maria Ana Vasco Costa

Know for her contemporary ceramic interventions, Maria Ana Vasco Costa reinterprets Portuguese artistic traditions through geometric forms that interact with light and space. 

Gabriela Albergaria

Through photography and drawing, Gabriela Albergaria explores the relationship between humans and Nature. Her work invites us to reflect on the landscapes around us and the ways in which they are shaped by both natural processes and human intervention.

Alexander Koch

A tribute to the photographer who once had his studio in this very building, celebrating his artistic legacy and connection to the space.

Vhils

Created by renowned Portuguese artist Vhils, this mural honours the local community and the people who have shaped the identity of Alfama throughout generations.
