Living Sagres

A PLACE WHERE HISTORY SET SAIL

Nestled at Europe’s extreme southwest, Sagres is a town rooted deeply in its past yet eternally forward-looking. It was here, on these rugged cliffs, that Prince Henry the Navigator ignited the Age of Discovery, setting sail Portugal’s path toward the new world.

From this dramatic promontory within the Southwest Alentejo Nature Park, the visionary prince planned expeditions that would forever change the map, discovering the Atlantic islands of Madeira and the Azores and breaking through the limits of the known world by passing Cape Bojador in 1434. These voyages opened the coasts of Africa and led Europe to Brazil, India, and the Far East.

Today, the spirit of those fearless navigators lives on in Sagres, in its people, its landscape, and the timeless Atlantic horizon that beckons to explorers still.

Baleeira Harbour

The Baleeira Harbour is where Sagres reveals its rhythm. Fishing boats, tides, and the Atlantic breeze shape a landscape that is both raw and calming. From sunrise to sunset, the harbour reflects the spirit of the Algarve’s western coast, simple and authentic, and deeply connected to the sea.

Sagres Fortress

A fortress reshaped in the 18th century, with a 15th-century tower and an imposing neoclassical gate. Its walls stretch across the Sagres cape, once protected by cannons and military quarters. Marked by the presence of Prince Henry the Navigator and the ancient history of the Promontorium Sacrum, this site holds a unique place in Portuguese legend and heritage.

Cape São Vicent

Sacred since 4BC, this cape has long been a place of worship, first for sun deities and later for Christian pilgrims following the burial of Saint Vincent. Over the centuries, convents and a lighthouse marked its spiritual and maritime importance. Much of what stands today dates from the 18th century, later reshaped in the 19th century to guide sea routes to Africa, the Mediterranean, and the Americas.

Vila do Bispo Church

A 17th-century church with a richly tiled nave from 1726, decorated in blue and white motifs of dolphins and jars. The main altar features gilded panels and an early 16th-century image of Our Lady, the church’s patron saint. Side altars dedicated to St Peter and St Paul, along with a small museum displaying notable religious artworks, complete the visit.

Our Lady Guadalupe Hermitage

Dating back to the 13th century, the small Our Lady of Guadalupe Hermitage has Templar origins and blends Gothic and Roman influences. Its modest façade reflects early Gothic rural architecture, while the interior stands out for its arched main chapel and decorated capitals, characteristic of the Gothic style of the period.
